Young Kashmiri man shot dead at Srinagar protest while Modi blithered

Gowhar Ahmed Dar:Kashmir Nov 9 2015

This is 22-year-old Gowhar Ahmed Dar, an engineering student from Srinagar killed when Indian police opened fire & shot tear gas at those protesting the occupation of Kashmir during Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s speech on Saturday. Media reported young Dar was killed when a tear gas shell struck his head but he was in fact killed by a bullet.

The area was on martial law lockdown to prevent the “Million March” called by independence groups to protest the occupation during Modi’s rally which hundreds of Kashmiris were forced to attend. Under Indian occupation, protesting is not a democratic right–which is always a dead-giveaway to tyranny (like Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem & the West Bank). Police called the protesters a “stone-throwing mob” to justify the assault on unarmed protesters.

The death of Gowhar Dar brought thousands more into the streets & at the university campus. It will also likely increase violent repression by Indian police & paramilitary thugs making international solidarity an imperative.

People around the world are inundating social media with messages condemning the Indian repression & occupation & expressing condolences for the death of Gowhar Dar. You can join the groundswell at ‪#‎IAmGowharDar‬.

The primary reason for resistance to tyranny: that children may know only freedom

Muslims in Myanmar (Nicolas Asfouri:AFP:Getty) Nov 9 2015

Frequently we need to step back from the news of war & genocide which seem so daunting, so impregnable to political resistance. We cannot let ourselves be overwhelmed by military arsenals that can take out the planet & are not averse to that option if oligarchic interests are threatened.

We have too much at stake to let our beautiful planet be destroyed by greed, by colonial predation, by racism, misogyny, & other malignant ideologies. We have children to think about–& their right to inherit a world suitable for human beings to live & love in.

These are Muslim children (not Rohingya Muslim) in Myanmar who live in squalid slums because of decades of discrimination–much of it fomented by British colonialism. Only the most contemptible ideologies could consider them inferior to anyone.

As the Vietnamese showed, it is possible to win against superior military might. As Palestinians show, especially through their intransigence & the strategy of BDS, it is possible to weaken the mightiest fortress–to eventually win justice.

Our fullest solidarity with the Muslims of Myanmar.

Myanmar elections a big, fat fraud

Aung San Suu Kyi & her National League for Democracy party (NLD) await official results giving them a landslide victory in the Myanmar elections. This is not, as media proclaims, a landmark, whoop-dee-doo moment for democracy since the NLD will be power-sharing with unelected military officials. The junta is still in full control–including over who won the elections & what they will be allowed to do once in office.

It isn’t democracy that marks these elections but exclusion of nearly five million Muslims from voting. Suu Kyi & the NLD claim their policy is human rights & democracy but would not allow Muslim members to run as candidates. She did however urge Muslim party members to campaign for her among Muslims not completely disenfranchised like the Rohingya.

The NLD admitted it kept Muslims off the ballot because of pressure from the ultranationalist Buddhist movement linked to the military junta orchestrating the genocide of Rohingya. Suu Kyi campaigned in the state of Rakhine but skipped the northern region where Rohingya Muslims face pogroms & live in concentration camps because the junta had rendered them stateless & ineligible to vote.

What kind of human rights candidate ignores genocide, the denial of religious freedom, or disenfranchisement of millions based on their religion or ethnicity? What kind of democracy candidate plays ball with a military junta, with international forces of exploitation, & promenades as the progressive face of military dictatorship rather than denouncing it? The distinctions between Suu Kyi & Hillary Clinton get lost in stinking miasmas of cynicism.

Cosmetic boycott list to honor BDS

Though most countries do almost nothing to curb discrimination & violence against women, they’re all Johnny-on-the-spot in using feminism to promote war, military occupation, eugenics, ethnic cleansing, & apartheid. The US Pentagon & Israel are both playing that out to the max & masterfully.

Feminism is the emancipatory theoretics of women’s oppression, not an all-purpose shibboleth to be manipulated for nefarious political gains. Feminists have to wrest our ideas back from the war-mongers & not allow our movement to be hijacked to serve reaction & violence.

Several cosmetics companies have extensive business & political relationships with Israel & are on the BDS boycott list. That includes all Estée Lauder brands (Aveda, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Origins); Revlon brands (Almay); L’Oreal brands (Lancome, Garnier, Maybelline, Redken, The Body Shop).

L’Oreal Paris is now running a 2015 Women of Worth contest–partially to use feminism to divert us from the company’s involvement with Israel. Sometimes a mascara wand is not just a beauty device but a cover for apartheid.

Boycott all cosmetics companies doing business with/in Israel.

Thoroughgoing critiques must be made of what electoral democracy has become & what elections are all about. Nothing showcases that better than the farce & chicaneries of US presidential elections. But nothing makes it more imperative than those many regimes where a military junta steps back from direct rule & allows elections & quasi-civilian rule.

Tomorrow, Myanmar (Burma) will hold elections being lauded as “historic,” “landmark,” & the “best chance for free & credible elections in 25 years.” The candidates for president are incumbent Thein Sein, a former general, versus Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Myanmar has a system like the US or Mexico where the president heads the government, not the prime minister. The military ruled directly for nearly 50 years–until 2010 when they decided to rule behind a facade of electoral democracy.

One potential problem in these “free & credible” elections is that the junta made a law specifically designed to keep Suu Kyi out of the presidency even if she wins. It isn’t a problem to the junta since the last elections they called in 2010 & 2012 (which elected Thein Sein) were massively fraudulent according to international observers. They can steal another election just as easily & since there is no democracy or judicial system in the country, they can throw those in jail who object. If things really get out of hand, they can reinstitute direct military rule.

Suu Kyi, who media calls an “opposition leader,” has demonstrated over & over again her willingness to play ball with the junta & its neoliberal austerity & development plans. With insuperable arrogance she claims she will be “above the president” if her party wins the election. She’s not stupid but likely believes her fame & international stature will protect her & also understands Myanmar needs foreign investment jeopardized by direct military rule.

People in Myanmar can go to Suu Kyi’s rallies (that looks good in international media), but according to Amnesty International, “a targeted crackdown on freedom of expression & the right to peaceful assembly has only intensified” during the election campaign.

Which of the two candidates wins isn’t the central dilemma in the elections because there’s very little of substance they disagree about. The heart of Myanmar politics, including these elections, is the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims which has reached genocidal proportions. Since Rohingya are denied citizenship, all 1.5 million of them will be denied voting rights–along with 2.5 million people from other ethnic groups.

Suu Kyi is absolutely shameful when asked about the persecution of Rohingya. She’s criticized for her silence when she should be excoriated for her collusion. When asked recently by a reporter for “Sixty Minutes” on CBS, she was evasive & coy about their persecution but at a press conference last week in Myanmar she said “It is very important that we should not exaggerate the problems.” The UN also plays coy when it comes to Rohingya genocide but a human rights clinic at Yale Law School published a legal analysis that found “strong evidence” of genocide against Rohingya.

The evidence isn’t merely “strong”. It’s overwhelming & completely damning: violent pogroms against Rohingya–murdering them & torching their homes; concentration camps where 150,000 are detained in squalid, subhuman conditions; thousands fleeing for safety to refugee camps in Bangladesh & Thailand; thousands risking their lives this year to escape on rickety boats without food & water.

The photo is Rohingya Muslim children at a clinic in one of the concentration camps in Rakhine State where most Rohingya live or lived. Take a look at the quality of health facilities offered.

To the forces of Rohingya justice, quite frankly it doesn’t matter who wins the Myanmar elections.

Our fullest solidarity with Rohingya Muslims against genocide in Myanmar.

Long live Palestinian & Kashmiri Intifada!

Kashmir stone-throwers

A Palestinian protest in the West Bank? In fact, it’s Kashmiri protesters in Srinagar going up unarmed against Indian paramilitary thugs. The similarities between the two struggles are striking & not just in barbarism nor accidentally so. The struggle in Kashmir which also involves stone-throwers against tanks & semi-automatic weapons is often called the “Kashmiri Intifada.” Both conflicts derive originally from British colonialism but now play a central role in international politics. Neither is just a dispute over real estate.

Kashmir is not a political matter only of concern to Kashmiris & India & just of remote concern to the rest of us. The US funds India to the tune of millions of dollars a year for military (including nuclear arms), economic, & other purposes to foster India as a regional ally. In 2014, the US gave India over USD $3,228 million. Between 1946 & 2012, the US gave $65.1 billion to India & during the same timeframe gave $65 billion to Israel. That makes the US party to the occupation of Kashmir & that relationship needs to be investigated, exposed, & publicly opposed.

Israel has its own long-term relationship with India including billions of dollars in arms deals. It is also involved up to its eyeballs in counterinsurgency training in Kashmir. Drawing on decades of brutality against Palestinians, Israel has become the master of occupation & terrorism. The entire nefarious labyrinth of collusions needs to be investigated, exposed, & publicly opposed.

It isn’t just an affinity in barbarism the three regimes share but the international role they are playing as partners in maintaining exploitation & massive inequality all over this planet. And that needs to be opposed.

One of the best ways to forge solidarity is to hold forums where Palestinian & Kashmiri speakers can tell their stories of occupation against common enemies. This becomes more imperative to answer the increasing Israeli attacks on free speech in countries around the world. Such solidarity will not dilute but only strengthen the struggles in both Kashmir & Palestine.

Long live Palestinian & Kashmiri Intifada!

Palestinians protest for return of those shot dead by Israel

Pal protesters near Hebron 11:4:2015 (Mussa Qawasma:Reuters) Nov 5 2015

Media continues to peddle the rubbish of a stabbing rampage by Palestinians–of course to cover for Israel’s pogrom against Palestinians. What they don’t report about is Israel’s illegal occupation of East Jerusalem & the West Bank or the continuing bombing & murderous blockade of Gaza that the UN says will make Gaza uninhabitable by 2020.

Why don’t they explain that the confrontations take place between Israeli soldiers & unarmed Palestinians when Israel attempts to suppress Palestinian protests against the occupation & expropriation of lands? Or in this instance, protesting for the return of Palestinians shot dead by Israel so their loved ones can be buried with respect & honor?

Once again, it is outrageous & idiotic to claim Palestinians armed with knives are a widespread danger. It would only be credible if Israeli soldiers & settlers were planting bazookas or semi-automatic weapons on Palestinians they execute, rather than shivs. But to be clear, if Palestinians were using knives to defend themselves, that is their right against an illegal & brutal military occupation that kidnaps & assaults their children, arrests hundreds for no reason or for tossing a rock, allows settlers to torch homes & mosques, & dispossesses entire villages to make room for settlers & phony religious shrines.

Support Palestinian justice by building the economic, cultural, & academic boycott of Israel (barcode beginning 729) & continuing public protests & forums demanding Israel end the pogrom & end the occupation.

Bernie Sanders supports continuation of US war in Afghanistan

Bernie Sanders announced on ABC that he supports Obama’s decision to keep US troops in Afghanistan through 2017. Of course he does. And if by some deus ex machina twist in politics the Democratic Party allowed him to be candidate, he would execute US wars without batting an eyelash.

We won’t ask the Sanders socialists to make an accounting. They wouldn’t know what the hell we’re talking about. They’re the crowd who believe in “humanitarian wars”–along with evil fairies & boogiemen.

India cracks down on Kashmir in preparation for Modi rally in Srinagar

Kashmiri protester (AP Photo:Dar Yasin) Nov 4 2015

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be speaking at rallies in occupied Kashmir this weekend. Ostensibly, he’ll be there to inaugurate a power project & offer economic assistance but that is entirely inconsistent with his neoliberal policies in India or with occupation policies in Kashmir. He’ll also be meeting with top Indian generals in Srinagar–which is consistent with occupation policies in Kashmir.

In response, Kashmiri independence activists called a ‘million people march’ opposing India’s sovereignty over & occupation of Kashmir. According to independence leader Syed Ali Geelani, “Our rally is to showcase to the world that Kashmiris reject India’s brutal military occupation of Kashmir.”

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, the compromised politician who runs Kashmir in coalition with Modi’s party, said Modi “genuinely wants to win the hearts & minds of people” through the region’s development.

There might be a better way to win Kashmiri hearts & minds–like withdrawing the 700,000 troops & paramilitary thugs making it the most militarized region of the world & ceasing extrajudicial executions, disappearances, murders, rapes, kidnappings, torture, incarceration of thousands of activists.

But instead, in preparation for Modi’s speech on Saturday & to make him seem welcome, India placed Kashmiri independence leaders under house arrest, rounded up hundreds of activists on night raids of their homes & jailed them, & Indian troops stopped & frisked all vehicles entering Srinagar “for suspected militants.” Omar Abdullah, a former Chief Minister & a pro-India leader of Kashmir, denounced the arrests & tweeted, the “Srinagar rally will be historic–for the number of people arrested to make the rally possible.”

In an extraordinary, if not also inadvertent, admission, the head of police in Kashmir said the arrests were part of the “usual security drill” in Kashmir. “There’s nothing unusual about these detentions,” he said. It’s just the same old martial law India always enforces.

The venue where Modi will be speaking in Srinagar has been turned into a military fortress with battalions of police & paramilitary thugs patrolling & doing anti-sabotage duty in the area. Sharpshooters are positioned on high-rise buildings around the stadium & ‘intelligence sleuths will be keeping an eye on suspicious persons.’ That winning the hearts & minds thing doesn’t seem to be working optimally.

Several FB pages which promoted the million people march have already been shut down & the entire internet will be shut down during Modi’s visit. They can’t shut down those around the world who stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir.

This is a Kashmiri woman shouting slogans after Indian police arrested an independence leader in Srinagar.

Our fullest solidarity with the people of Kashmir. End the Indian occupation.
