For two days now, Facebook has been insistently requesting my telephone number for security purposes–by which of course they don’t mean my security. Are they finally going to call me & tell me what happened to those 350 posts they deleted in 2012? I’m still waiting for a response.

Just when you think Republican candidates are providing all the comedy in this presidential election, Hillary Clinton proves she has some stand-up qualities of her own.

It’s not reported where she said this but it was tweeted by Politico & Wall Street Journal reporters: When asked about global poverty, Clinton replied, “I’ve had many conversations with Bono on this.”

We weep for the Republic.

Constant war is an inner compulsion, the driving force of neoliberalism, the barbaric phase of capitalism. But for tens of thousands of people, war is not carnage & devastation–it’s good business. Is it rational when so much of the Middle East is a killing field, that Abu Dhabi in the UAE hosts a biennial International Defense Exhibit (IDEX) to showcase the latest in bombers, tanks, grenade launchers, anti-tank missile systems, air-to-service rocket launchers, surveillance satellites, semi-automatic weapons?

A lot of business goes on that that event that this year drew 100,000 arms dealers, military & government officials from around the world. The amount of transactions at the 2005 IDEX totaled USD $2 billion; but according to one research institute, arms sales of the top 100 arms dealers & military services at the 2013 IDEX totaled $402 billion. There’s no report on what was spent at the IDEX last February but the UAE’s armed forces alone signed contracts worth $5 billion.

According to Paramount Group (a South African consortium of military manufacturers), military spending among Middle Eastern regimes grew to $120.6 billion in 2014. Now the question arises, who would they be defending since it certainly isn’t the people of Yemen, Bahrain, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, or Palestinians? With such an arsenal among Middle Eastern regimes, how did ISIS get to be such a threat? Or are they arming themselves against their own people?

This year, 1,200 companies from 56 countries displayed their military wares. Those who think building an antiwar movement is just for those in countries doing the war-making, what about those countries that produce the arsenals? Like Sweden–Bernie Sanders’ model for socialism? Warfare is an international enterprise: an army will be bombing with US jets, driving tanks from Sweden, shooting down aircraft with Russian equipment, & taking out villages with assault weapons from China.

Arms dealers don’t worry about things like weapons “falling into the wrong hands.” Business is business; war is business. The US can no longer claim ISIS is armed by weaponry captured from the Iraqi Army in 2014. Conflict Armament Research, an NGO that tracks movement of military weaponry internationally, concluded last year that ISIS is armed by US & Chinese munitions (including small arms & heavy equipment like Humvees) “transferred by the US & Chinese governments to regional actors for use against ISIL troops.” They found 20 percent of ISIS munitions were manufactured in the US. If in fact “regional actors” are handing US weapons over to ISIS, why doesn’t the US stop arming the “regional actors”? To cover its ass, the Pentagon claims the US lost track of 250,000 small arms provided to the Afghan army which may have been provided to ISIS. If the US can’t even trust its own allies, maybe it ought to get the hell out of there.

We’re supposed to think this child behind the wheel of an armored vehicle at the IDEX is just adorable. It isn’t. We don’t like our children considered as cannon fodder for arms dealers. We don’t like our beautiful planet turned into a military fortress & killing field. Build the international antiwar movement to end this monstrous perspective once & for all.

The first World Indigenous Games, modeled on the Olympics, were held in Palmas, Brazil from October 23rd to November 1st. Over 2,000 Indigenous athletes from between 20 to 30 countries participated, including several countries in the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, the Philippines, Ethiopia, Mongolia. From Brazil alone, 24 different Indigenous tribes participated.

The events included western-style games like soccer & traditional games like log carrying. Some of the games were competitive; others simply showcased athletic prowess. There was even the regrettable introduction of a western-style beauty pageant for women–in the west reflecting urban longing for a livestock show apparently not satisfied by once-a-year state fair exhibitions.

Few people inspire so much loathing as Bernard-Henri Lévy & Phyllis Chesler–haters of Islam & among the most vituperative defenders of Israeli apartheid. Lévy, who positively stinks of elitism & misogyny, defended Dominique Strauss-Kahn against charges he raped a NYC hotel maid in 2011. In a colossal misjudgment of US courts, he ranted against the US legal system that would treat DSK just like “any other person.” In the inscrutable parlance of his “new philosophy,” he said “Everybody is not everybody.” You tell ’em Bernie!

Photojournalism completely belies the media narrative of a Palestinian “stabbing Intifada,” as it was dubbed by Bernard-Henri Lévy, the French guy who tries to give Israeli apartheid & Islamophobia a human face. He calls himself a “nouveau philosophe” but he’s just a washed-up apologist for social hatred dressed up like a bon vivant. Israel would be wise to dump him.

While media repeats Israeli propaganda that Palestinians are on a stabbing rampage, photos show Palestinian protesters either unarmed or armed only with slingshots & rocks. Some photos show unarmed protesters returning tear gas canisters or running from Israeli soldiers firing live ammo with assault weapons.

The Saudi-led, US-backed carpet bombing of Yemen receives no coverage in US media while the bombing is taking out everything that stands including homes, government buildings, hospitals & clinics, & this food storage warehouse. The bombing has gone on nonstop since March. Thousands have been bombed to death, thousands injured, nearly two million displaced & made homeless.

This barbaric siege isn’t about Houthi & al-Qaeda fighters; it’s about bombing the Yemen uprising in 2011 to smithereens–& it is intended as a warning to peoples everywhere that this is what’s in store for them if they attempt a revolution against tyranny. Yemen has become a wasteland of rubble, a killing field like Gaza & Syria.

By whose authority does Mahmoud Abbas speak? He calls himself president of the State of Palestine but there is no such state. He was elected head of the Palestinian National Authority, formed out of the Oslo Accords to preside over the surrender of Palestinians. But his term in that treacherous capacity ended in January 2009. So who the hell is he talking for if not the most conservative forces in Palestinian society? Surely he doesn’t represent those involved in Intifada on the front lines of struggle against Israeli occupation.

Helen Mirren loves Israel–despite apartheid, carpet bombing of Gaza, & extra judicial executions of protesters. Thus she detests BDS, the boycott of Israel. When interviewed before receiving her achievement award from the Israel Film Festival in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Mirren said she agreed with British Zionist figures, including JK Rowling, who signed an open letter last week opposing the cultural boycott of Israel & calling for cultural engagement “as a way to promote peace between Israel & the Palestinians.” Mirren said that quite earnestly whilst Israel is engaged in a violent pogrom against Palestinians.
