Gaza children killed in 2014

This is a wall with the names of Palestinian children killed in Israel’s 2014 bombing offensive of Gaza. Actually, there were at least 495 children killed so this is only just over half of them. Such a memorial gives immediacy & makes personal the devastating loss of life. Over 2,200 Palestinians were killed; 11,000 were wounded, including with permanent disabilities; 20,000 homes were destroyed & 500,000 people were displaced. Israel admits to 5,226 airstrikes over seven weeks in an area of 360 kmĀ² (139 sq. miles). Israeli citizens waved flags & watched all this sitting in lawn chairs sucking down beers in the hills of Sderot just a mile from the Gaza border.

Reality puts in perspective all the US-Israel malarkey about Palestinians obstructing peace talks. Support Palestinians by checking the label on every product you buy to make sure its country of origin is not Israel.

A Bangladeshi court just upheld a ruling by the Sheikh Hasina government banning Bangladeshi citizens from marrying Rohingya refugees. The ruling is of course intended to prevent refugees from acquiring citizenship through marriage. There would be no concerns about marriages for citizenship if the Sheikh Hasina government provided asylum with refugee rights to education, healthcare, employment & wasn’t threatening to forcibly repatriate refugees. Outlawing love & marriage is a profoundly undemocratic move but even smarmy Sheikh Hasina can’t stop love.

Cable news networks seem to exist only to keep US politics within the framework of the two major parties & political thinking entirely provincial, only concerned with US electoral politics. US wars & the attacks on the poor, children, elderly, disabled only come up as Democrat’s debater’s points against Republicans. If anything, news intended to be a stranglehold on political perspectives documents the bankruptcy of provincialism & the two-party system.

Hoping “The Greatest Showman” doesn’t win a damn thing at the movie award show tonight but it will because of the talents of Hugh Jackman. One of the traumas of my childhood was seeing a freak show at the circus featuring conjoined twins in a cage. The movie glorifies P.T. Barnum as a champion of the marginalized & disabled when he was a vicious, ruthless exploiter. The circus freak show went out of style in the 1960s to be replaced by talk shows that held people up for ridicule. Oprah began her career with one of those but soon morphed into a self-help guru which, believe me, was an advance over the freak show which was an ignominious part of entertainment history.

Gossip isn’t politics even though there’s a whole genre of writers who confuse that. “Fire & Fury” will be great for getting the dirt on Trump but who needs any more than we have? We have the Muslim ban, the alliance with white supremacists, the tax cuts for millionaires & corporations, the racism toward Blacks, Mexicans, immigrants & refugees, the attacks on health care & benefits for poor children. That’s just for starters. The salacious details of his mental state & personal corruption are more than most of us want to know.

Emancipation Russia-style: carpet bombing civilians

Russian bombing of Hmouriya (Muhammad Najem) Jan 7 2018

This is a White Helmet rescue worker carrying the body of a small child killed by Russian bombing over the village of Hamouriya in besieged Eastern Ghouta. For those confused about what is happening in Syria, the guiding principle is: the country bombing civilians is criminally culpable & on the wrong side of justice. Anyone who claims bombing civilians is justified in defense of Assad’s national sovereignty has abandoned basic political morality probably because they are reading too much fascist propaganda. Those socialists who claim political morality is greasy kid stuff have gone over to the dark side from which there is no return & which is a straight shot to hell.

Russian carpet bombing of Eastern Ghouta, Syria

Ghouta siege bombing of Hmouriya (Muhammad Najem) Jan 7 2018

Russia’s defense of the Assad dictatorship’s national sovereignty in the village of Hamouriya in besieged Eastern Ghouta: hard to tell the difference from “Emancipation US-style” which also carpet bombs everything in sight to bring a civilian population to its knees.

What Russia did with the US elections–which during the best of times are a mockery of democracy–is secondary to what Russia is doing in Syria & to its arming of the Burmese military junta against the Rohingya people. If you support the Putin regime in this carnage, you are on the side of state terrorism & oppression no matter what illusions you have about standing against US regime-change scenarios.

The only principled demands are that Russia, Syria, & the US-coalition stop the bombing of civilians & for the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of all foreign military forces from Syria. Let Assad face the Syrian revolution without the aid of foreign bombers & counter-revolutionary militias.

Justice for Kashmiri Tufail Matoo

Please consider liking & sharing this Facebook wall to get justice for 17-year-old Tufail Matoo who was gruesomely gunned down by police outside a sports stadium in Srinagar on June 11, 2010. He was not engaged in any political activity. The police have refused to investigate his death & no one has ever been held accountable. Tufail was the only son of Rubeena & Mohammad Ashraf Mattoo. His mother has become discouraged by years of fruitless struggle for justice but his father refuses to back down from storming justice. He told Al Jazeera that he does not expect to get justice under the occupation but is fighting a battle against forgetfulness–against going through the rituals of burial & moving on with life as if his son’s gruesome death was just to be stoically accepted. He said his fight is not for his son alone but for every youth killed in Kashmir.

You can honor the memory of Tufail & the commitment to justice of his father by liking & sharing this page.

Four Kashmiri policeman die in IED blast

IED blast (telugunow.com) Jan 6 2018

The death this morning of four Kashmiri policeman by an IED bomb in the town of Sopore is very tragic. Civilians were also injured, shops were destroyed in the blast, & Indian occupying forces are now hunting down those who laid the bomb. Kashmiris have a right to oppose the military occupation by any means necessary. Guerrilla warfare has not proven anywhere in the world to be the most effective means & Kashmiris in their majority use mass actions & mass strikes in its stead because it’s very difficult for ill-trained young fighters with a rifle to win against powerful, highly-trained, well-equipped military forces. It also attracts nearly as many agents provocateurs as inspired young freedom fighters. It is especially hazardous now that India is on a hunt to kill offensive executing so many freedom fighters.

Of course the incident would never have happened if police & Indian counterinsurgency forces weren’t heavily deployed in Sopore to prevent the 25th anniversary commemorations of the massacre of 57 civilians & an arson spree by paramilitary troops in 1993. This photo is Indian occupying troops who’d scare the hell out of anybody as they entered a town in force. The militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad is claiming responsibility for today’s attack but the onus belongs entirely to the Indian army & government who created the provocation by deploying troops armed to the teeth into the center of a town. Mehbooba Mufti, India’s chief minister in Kashmir condemned the attack & sent her condolences to the families of the four policemen. Meanwhile, the families of the thousands injured & disabled by pellet guns, the thousands incarcerated & disappeared, those executed in the hunt to kill operations, those whose homes have been razed to the ground are still waiting for condolences or even an expression of concern from Mufti.

The deaths of these four policemen are making international headlines. That would be good if the attention helped expose the character of the Indian occupation but it will be used mainly to associate the Kashmiri freedom struggle with terrorism. We need to counter that with the truth. It was a gruesome attack & no one deserves to die by being blown to smithereens. We only wish the Indian occupying army would not use their deaths to execute & injure more Kashmiris fighting for their freedom.

Our condolences to the families of the four policemen. May the fellows Rest In Peace. Our condolences to all of the thousands who have suffered & died because of the Indian occupation of Kashmir.

End the occupation. Self-determination for Kashmir.

A lot of people can be confused by the Assad dictatorship. Revolution & counter-revolution are complicated politics & Assad propagandists have immense resources to obfuscate. But when you see even a few Palestinians, Kashmiris, or those in Northern Ireland fall for the lies & stand on the side of oppression, it is truly one of the saddest things in politics.
