Cornel West talks tough to power

Cornel West

So Cornel West, appointed by Bernie Sanders, talked tough to power at the 2016 Democratic party convention platform drafting committee–a committee stacked with Clinton & pro-Israel supporters.

Apparently nowadays, you become a people’s hero if you recognize the humanity of the Palestinians–which is nothing but a lousy discount on self-determination & justice. Why should they settle for ceremonial rhetoric & political chump change & who in the hell do we think we are in brokering the discounts?

West feigns an ambivalent relationship to the Democratic Party; his political biography is filled with mea culpas over which lesser evil he claims he was schnookered by. Talking tough to power by advocating BDS & citing the Israeli occupation is not courageous but an impotent grandstanding gesture because he knows it doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of inclusion in the DP platform. But it does assure him of substantial honoraria as an outspoken voice for people’s power.

But even if it did become platform, so what? There isn’t a single instance when US political policy has been governed or restrained by what a handful of minions & party hacks decide. It’s all for show since US policy toward Israel–which is exactly the same in both parties–is not determined by functionaries but by think tanks, special consultants, the Pentagon, CIA, & US strategic interests in the Middle East.

West is playing us for fools to maintain the hold of the Democratic Party on progressives. That’s his role as Sanders’ minion.

The point however is to build BDS to strengthen Palestinian political power & in that regard grandstanding doesn’t cut it.

Build BDS!

Bhopal petition garnered 122,727 signatures demanding US government stop obstructing justice

Bhopal child (Alex Masi)

In case anyone missed it, the petition circulated by Bhopal justice activists gathered 122,727 signatures in 30 days. It demands the US government stop obstructing justice by shielding Dow Chemical from accountability in the 1984 toxic gas release in Bhopal, India. Up to 10,000 people were killed instantly, 500,000 maimed, & it has left a legacy of second & third generation neurological health problems, serious disabilities, & environmental ruin. What kind of criminality allows a corporation to walk away from justice for such immense wreckage!?

This boy named Faizan lives near the former Union Carbide (now Dow) industrial complex. Not properly warned, his mother, a 1984 accident survivor, has been feeding Faizan red-colored contaminated water since his birth & the family relies on it for cooking, laundry, bathing. This picture is not to hold him up as an object of pity since, as we’ve learned from disability rights, everyone is perfect just as they are. It is to show the scale of the criminal legacy Dow is trying to elude. This little guy, now a teen, requires significant social assistance to lead the life he’s worthy of.

We should take a moment to honor the relentless Bhopal activists & be grateful & proud we could play a small part in supporting their efforts. Actually for those in the US, it is our duty to hold our government to account.

Special thanks to Roshen Chandran.

My friend arranged for four of my rescue girls to get spayed through a free community program, including the full Monty of treatments for a dog–even a microchip. We took three of them yesterday. They were taken away in a van in their own little kennels looking very sad. I have a philosophy that doesn’t allow animals to be caged so maybe it was just me projecting.

When she brought them back to me they were wearing those plastic gizmos to keep them from licking their wounds & were all disoriented, doped up with pain meds, & miserable. It was an up-close & personal reminder of why I oppose testing of any kind on living animals, including mice.

When we got home I removed the collars & have been comforting them for the past several hours while they moan–& also, being dogs, milk it for the extra attention. They’re probably not so much in pain as confused. But it’s just me trying to assure them that I’m not responsible for their misery. If they understood a word I said, I’d blame it all on my friend who so generously & kindly provided this for their care.

The last one to get spayed is my big galoot who is divinely sweet & also slightly psychotic. She must have escaped a rope because if I try to leash her for a walk she goes nuts. But she’s smart enough to go to college & continually gets past my barricades–including taking them all with her into the street. One little guy had to get a leg amputated after apparently getting hit by a car in one of her escapes. She also constantly menaces my birds & killed one. When she’s fixed & chipped, I’ll get her on a caravan to Denver where they foster them, not kennel them, until they’re adopted into a forever loving family.

Screw International Yoga Day: the farce of Narendra Modi’s rehabilitation from pogroms to man of peace

Happy yoga day (from FB wall of Hemant Morparia via Syed Amir Abbas Rizvi) June 21 2016

Many Indian & Kashmiri friends are posting delightful mockeries of the second International Yoga Day–a UN ceremonial day instituted last year at the initiative of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. As if American practitioners & phony gurus haven’t done enough to discredit the practice.

This is a slightly edited version of my post last year at the inauguration of the event:
****

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led 37,000 people in a mass yoga session in Delhi’s Rajpath, an area where protests have been banned. The event is part of the first International Yoga Day called by Modi. Mass yoga sessions were held in several countries including the US & China. The day was built as one to promote “harmony & peace.”

The Chinese government violently suppressed the Falun Gong about 15 years ago for holding similar mass events with qigong, calling it heretical. There are no reports they cracked down on the mass yoga events–though yoga, rooted in Hinduism, is also heretical to Chinese communism.

Modi claims he’s a long-time practitioner of yoga–though you wouldn’t know it from his awkward execution of the different postures. Given Modi’s political history & his obvious public relations jaunts to put pogroms against Muslims behind him, we should question what this yoga business is all about. Is it part of the international attempt (which Obama is a part of) to create “Brand Modi”? Modi the man of peace not pogroms?

Maybe it is, as Muslims claim, an attempt to assert the dominance of Hinduism in India & promote a “Hindutva agenda at the cost of India’s secular democratic fabric.” Or is it Modi’s version of Obamacare in a country the World Health Organization ranks as one of the worst healthcare systems in the world (112 out of 190 countries)?

Is it a diversion from political reality like Michelle Obama’s obesity, organic garden, exercise thing? Or does it have associations with tyrannies, like fascism in Germany, where physical fitness became a sign of Aryan supremacy?

Or perhaps it is an attempt by India to reclaim yoga from US & European practitioners who have commercialized the practice, eliminated the spiritual aspects & use it solely as exercise?

Maybe we can get some clues from the 37,000 participants led in stretches, bends, & breathing asanas by Mr. Modi. According to media reports, they were “school children, bureaucrats, & soldiers.” Were they there on command? Will the Indian soldiers participating employ some of those peace-making asanas when they’re on duty in occupied Kashmir? Why did the event have to be locked down with thousands of police & paramilitary troops? Was there any likelihood of the yogis rioting?

Curious minds want to know because we’re awash in skepticism when Narendra Modi gets into the asana of a peacemaker.

Belated tribute to Kashmiri fathers

from Human Rights Violations in Kashmir

That this tribute is belatedly shared does not make it a whit less powerful. It is by Khurram Parvez, a human rights activist in Kashmir:

“On father’s day, let us pay tributes to all those fathers who shouldered the coffins of their children – those who bore the brunt of enforced disappearances of their children – those who were tortured & humiliated for protecting their families – those who sacrificed their everything for the happiness of their children & those who in their struggles were killed or disappeared.”

Progressives & Sanders’ supporters go ape over Warren’s endorsement of Clinton

Liz Warren

Several media sources are reporting that progressives & Sanders’ supporters are going all vituperative & hurling epithets like “sellout” at Elizabeth Warren after she endorsed Clinton. They say she’s dropping supporters like flies–at one point up to 20,000 a day.

Golly, you’d think she would have lost them two years ago when she defended Israeli carpet bombing in Gaza, when she had the monstrous temerity to say Israel had a right to bomb hospitals & schools because Hamas stored rocket launchers in them & used civilians as human shields. Then she voted more money for Israel to keep it up.

Apparently when some people weigh off which two-bit hustler becomes president of the US against the massive bombing of Palestinians, the former seems a more compelling matter.

You won’t make a political revolution with those kind of confusions.

CBS news is reporting FBI claims of a surge in “homegrown ISIS supporters” in the US. Is that a measure of social angst & alienation from the system? Of the scale of criminal insanity in the US? Of the paranoid imagination of FBI operatives? Or just another justification for the surveillance state? Color me skeptical as all get-out.

An orphaned elephant & his caretaker

Orphan elelphant and caretaker ((Photo by Michael Nichols:National Geographic) June 20 2016

Reposting this from May 2012 just because the relationship between the orphaned elephant & his caretaker is so tender & endearing:
******
Elephants are deeply emotional & loving animals & form intense bonds of love with their rescuers & caretakers. According to the caretakers, the love goes both ways. As one caretaker said, “It’s not for the wages. The more you’re with them, the more you satisfy yourself. You just love them.” That bond is more than evident here between caretaker & orphan at the Sheldrick orphanage in Kenya.

Who doesn’t like to nail corporations for malfeasance? But it’s positively embarrassing that a federal judge has allowed two Starbucks customers to pursue a lawsuit against the coffee chain for under-filling lattes. Who has the kind of money it takes for such a frivolous lawsuit? Nobody likes to be stiffed but why didn’t they just find another coffee shop?

Any woman who has ever pursued litigation for sexual harassment by a corporation faces an obstacle course of legal requirements & maneuvers just to file the lawsuit & will be lucky if it even gets that far.

Pardon me if it fries my ass that US jurisprudence gives stinking lattes priority over women’s right not to be abused & to be treated with respect.

Homophobia historically rooted in British colonialism & Christianity, not in Islam

Elena and her husband at Orlando

The Wall Street Journal is using the Orlando massacre to ramp up a scurrilous campaign against Muslims. Of course it’s the voice of Wall Street which makes fortunes from war & Islamophobia is the battle cry of war-mongering. They’ve run a series of articles with titles like “Jihad in Orlando” & “Islam’s Jihad Against Homosexuals,” the latter by professional & well-remunerated Islamophobe Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

To pull that off, you have to assume your readers will either swallow any rubbish you publish, are politically dumb as a stump, or that they’re all Episcopalians who don’t know their own catechism. All religions have conservative denominations that condemn homosexuality & most of them, except Catholicism & some other Christian groups, have progressive denominations that accept it as part of human life.

This photo is my friend Elena Ledesma Rashid & her husband, both Muslims. They traveled over 1,000 miles to Orlando to meet other Muslim friends & participate in the solidarity gathering yesterday of 50,000 people.

Does their journey to Orlando prove that Islam does not have a jihad against homosexuals? Of course not. That’s why there are history books that examine the subject–history books that don’t have an axe to grind against Muslims. That’s where you learn Islam has a long history of tolerance, that in the 19th century homosexuality was decriminalized in the Muslim Ottoman Empire which controlled vast parts of Europe, Asia, & Africa.

Historical investigations also show that criminalization of homosexuality was instituted under British colonial rule. In 2014, The Washington Post looked at data from 185 countries & reported that British colonies in South Asia, Africa, & the Middle East were much more likely to criminalize homosexuality than colonies of other European nations & they claim that almost 70 percent of states with a British colonial past continue to criminalize homosexual conduct.

This would suggest homophobia in many countries has a political heritage rooted more in British colonialism than in religion. But religion did play a role in the sodomy laws. However, it was not the Quran & Islam but the Bible & Christianity that led to the sodomy laws in the overwhelming majority of countries.

The WSJ’s tendentious editorializing about Islam & homosexuality is the same kind of sloppy stuff passed off about Islam & women when the scholarship on Islamic feminism is ten miles high.

There’s no denying some denominations of Islam & many countries with reactionary Muslim leaderships have serious problems with homosexuality that are just as repressive as those of the Vatican & umpteen other Christian denominations. But how many actual massacres of homosexuals by Muslims can the WSJ cite to prove this alleged jihad?

There are unspeakable human rights crimes against homosexuals in many countries–from Russia to Kenya. But have the Islamophobes examined the role of US Christian evangelicals on sexual politics & homophobic legislation in several African countries run by Muslims & in countries like Russia? Highly unlikely because such realities interfere with war mongering.

Enough with the Islamophobia! Enough with using people’s cherished religious beliefs to justify bombers. Religious freedom is a historic acquisition that the war-mongers cannot be allowed to usurp. On the other hand, LGBT rights are yet to be realized in the overwhelming majority of countries, including the USA.

A tip of the hat to Elena, her husband, & the millions of other Muslims, Christians, Jews, & others who stand with the Orlando victims.
