Just last week, it was reported that four small Guatemalan children died in US custody while incarcerated in refugee concentration camps. All of them were sick & malnourished but were denied the care given by civilized societies to small children. Now today, it is reported that the second Guatemalan teenager has died while incarcerated by US authorities.
Carlos Gregorio Hernandez-Vasquez was arrested on May 13th crossing the border & stuck in the overcrowded facility here in McAllen. A few days later, he informed ICE agents he was ill & was diagnosed with the flu. Anyone who has ever had the flu knows just how incapacitating, even life-threatening it is but rather than hospitalize him agents purchased Tamiflu from a pharmacy. Where were the medical personnel who should be supervising the care of sick & malnourished children? Carlos Gregorio was found dead the next day in his cell. Such criminality & savagery toward children speaks to the racism of US immigration & refugee policy. Those officials responsible for his care should be charged with reckless endangerment of children & homicide. The lives of these Guatemalan children matter.

No one would deny the important role of singer Roger Waters in promoting the cultural boycott of Israel–though we would ask that he take a less offensive & misogynist approach when appealing to women. But he, Susan Sarandon, & Pamela Anderson are not just way out of their league politically but deranged when they accuse the White Helmet rescue workers of staging chemical gas attacks in Syria to make the Assad regime look bad. That’s worse than the vagaries of 9/11 truthers. The authorities they cite are RT (wholly owned by the Russian government), & Assad propagandists, including Caitlin Johnstone who became prominent denying the Muslim genocide in Bosnia & continues her war against Muslims in Syria. Waters negates all the positive work he does for BDS by associating the Palestinian struggle with fascists, Islamophobes, Stalinists, & ‘war on terror’ propaganda. Waters, Sarandon, & Anderson make jackasses of themselves when they draw from the dregs as their authorities.
The Iranian & Saudi governments are powerful, heavily militarized operations which are pervasively repressive toward their own citizens & operating militarily & brutally against the Syrian & Yemeni people. Why anyone feels the need to defend them as if they were persecuted or calls on either to play an emancipatory role in Middle East politics boggles the politically sane mind. A regime is judged by its relationship with its own citizens & by its military policies. By those measures, both Iran & Saudi Arabia are long overdue for an “Arab Spring” uprising of the kind they are trying to obliterate in Syria & Yemen.

With the release of the JKCCS report on torture in Kashmir & this report about torture of Palestinians in Israel, it seems torture is an important form of social control under military occupation as it is under other repressive regimes.
