When so many people write so much about the Kashmiri struggle, it isn’t because it’s our chosen hobbyhorse but because it’s one of the most important freedom struggles in the world. A triumph of Kashmiris against Indian colonialism would advance the struggles of all those around the world fighting against the violent legacy of colonialism. Not colonialism past tense, but modern colonialism, genocide, occupation, war.
Syed Yasir Qureshi so cogently points out the cynicism of India in proposing ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Muslims whilst the entire world, including Kashmir, is fighting a deadly epidemic.
“A nonagenarian Kashmiri leader who warned against Indian plans of upgrading military occupation to settler colonialism in Kashmir much before sanghis took over India, was mocked by the collaborators as hawk and a hardliner. The same leader is sorely missed by all Kashmiris today. May Geelani saeb outlive the occupation. Aameen.”
Mir Laieeq, on Syed Ali Geelani who is quite ill at the age of ninety
“Day by day, degree by degree, lie by lie, law by law, bullet by bullet, insult by insult, every time quite inconceivably the manifestation of the pre-existing colony into a stronger occupation gets stronger and stronger.”
–On India’s proposed ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Kashmir by Zafar Iqbal
It isn’t as if that there isn’t enough grieving in Kashmir already but the coronavirus has made it even worse. This is the story of a 62-year-old man whose family is broken by his death & the entire experience of the virus. May he Rest In Peace.
