Pardon me for being such a downer, but I have a hard time getting excited that Palestinian-American Nujoud Merancy is NASA Exploration Mission Planning Office Chief in Houston. NASA is a military operation. Is it likely that she got to where she is by standing for Palestinian self-determination or that she’ll stay in this position if she endorses BDS? What the hell does her ethnic background have to do with a damn thing & why does anyone think it matters? It only would if she was a person who put Palestinian justice before her career.
Speaking of the Turkish military onslaught against Kurdish civilians (who Assadists, Stalinists, Erdogan & Trump call terrorists) in northeast Syria, Trump told reporters that Turkey, “had to have it cleaned out.” Not unlike Nazis who claimed the holocaust was to ‘cleanse’ out Jews. Or Assadists & Stalinists who claim carpet bombing Idlib is to cleanse out ‘terrorists’.
There are several media reports that Turkey is using napalm & white phosphorous against the Kurds in northeast Syria. The US used white phosphorous in Raqqa, Israel uses it in Gaza, Syria & Russia use Sarin, other chemical agents & shrapnel bombs against Syrians. Chemical warfare is illegal under international law which has absolutely no enforcement authority or power. That is the nature of modern militarism & why we must rebuild a principled international antiwar movement.
How are children among the largest & most deeply victimized casualties of the Indian occupation? Let us count the ways, from being unable to safely attend school, play outside, avoid brutalization or kidnapping by Indian forces, being denied food & medical care, & suffering fear & trauma to actually getting injured or killed. Targeting children is the iron law of modern militarism in war, occupation, genocide.

#StandWithKashmir day in Pakistan on the 75th day of the siege & blockade. There will be reciprocal actions at Delhi University in India.
The thoroughly establishment Foreign Policy journal just published an article titled “Assad Is Now Syria’s Best-Case Scenario” by Stephen M. Walt. It lays out in four sentences the realpolitik, not ‘US regime-change operation’, that guides US foreign policy: “The best course of action today is for President Bashar al-Assad’s regime to regain control over northern Syria. Assad is a war criminal whose forces killed more than half a million of his compatriots & produced several million refugees. In a perfect world, he would be on trial at The Hague instead of ruling in Damascus. But we do not live in a perfect world, & the question we face today is how to make the best of a horrible situation.”
That statement of capitalist realpolitik is what many Assadists & Stalinists have been claiming all along & exposes their affinities with the most reactionary forces in world politics. The Arab Spring uprisings, including in Syria, & the Palestinian & Kashmiri struggles reject realpolitik for the visionary politics of social transformation. That’s what distinguishes freedom struggles from tyranny.
