South Padre Island, just off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, (one hour from here) is a hot spot for spring breakers who bring millions in revenues to local businesses. We can chastise young privileged students for recklessness but the responsibility is solely with South Padre & Texas officials. The only access to that island is via a couple bridges from the mainland. In the interests of public health, they only need close down access to students crossing & they have not done so. But the plot sickens since many of those students also cross over into nearby Mexico for shopping & partying & present a public health risk to Mexicans who have no social security or healthcare. News media is talking about the undeveloped brains of teens to explain the recklessness but the real issue is the greed of South Padre & Texas businesses.
