The future of a free Palestine

Palestinian children August 15 2014

Do you think a word of commentary is necessary–or is our elation for the surviving children of Gaza quite enough? Did we just go through hell over their fate only to see the little rascals playing games where they could break their necks?

These little ones are playing in the courtyard of a school the UN uses as a refugee center in Gaza City. They’ve been through hell & it’s only just begun but with the immense international solidarity movement now standing with them, they will grow to be the future of a free Palestine.

The mass psychology of ethnic cleansing

Israeli psychosis August 15 2014

Evidence mounts of mass psychosis in Israel, which is the full flowering of Zionist supremacist & colonial ideology. Zionists used to boast they made the desert bloom in Palestine. But bloom with what? Racism & social hatred so profound the society is disintegrating & rotting from cultural dry rot?

This sicko was photographed in a Jerusalem pub Wednesday morning. It’s unconfirmed that he is an Israeli army reservist. Most US combat veterans come home with psychosis, addiction, & other mental health problems; thousands commit suicide over guilt & grief at what they saw & did. Juicing it up in the morning might mean this guy has a shred of humanity left but when you flaunt ethnic cleansing on your shirt & drown your sorrows in a pint while psycho politicians praise you for your crimes, chances are there isn’t much left–& what is left isn’t worth the bother.

Keep marching for Palestine & evangelize for the economic boycott of all Israeli products (barcode beginning 729).

Low hung pants & Black rebellion

Ferguson long slung pants August 14 2014

The national obsession with how low Black kids wear their pants crescendoes into more ordinances & school bans all the time. Concern about Black teens showing their underwear is not matched by how much cleavage women show. Ain’t that curious!? But it’s not about modesty; it’s about civil rights & it’s certain many kids ride their pants low just to challenge social hatred. In truth, those pants defy the laws of gravity & physics might want to investigate rather than let blue-nosed racists ban them.

Here a young civil rights activist in Ferguson leaflets outside a community meeting to discuss the murder of Michael Brown. Can his underwear possibly be of interest to anyone when he’s in the front lines of making history?

Memphis 1968, Ferguson 2014

Black power 2014 August 15 2014

Memphis 1968 & Ferguson 2014: activists march in defiance of the Ferguson police description of the Black community as “fucking animals” with a simple, declaration of their humanity.

The defiance remains the same but the difference between the police force in Memphis 1968 & Ferguson 2014 could not be more dramatic & alarming. The Memphis cops are dressed like Barney Fife, though they used water cannons, attack dogs, mounted police, tear gas, & truncheons against protesters. Today the Pentagon is arming local police departments with military swag & Ferguson cops are dressed in camouflage gear & armed to the teeth with tear gas, rubber bullets, automatic weapons, handguns, combat armored vehicles, night vision equipment, military-grade assault rifles–like they’re going to storm the beach at Normandy.

Media is referring to Ferguson as a “war zone” & comparing it to Egypt & Iraq but inflammatory rhetoric is nothing new. To justify deployment of SWAT teams in the Black community beginning in the 1980s combat metaphors have been rampant in media including terms like “narco-terrorists”, “Beirut, USA”, “civil war zones”, & “regions under siege”.

The Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s & the anti-Vietnam War movement challenged police violence against unarmed protesters; those social movements numbering in the millions finally won the right of peaceful assembly which is in the Bill of Rights but not respected by police departments. Since the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle, police departments around the US have reintroduced storm-trooper tactics against peaceful protesters & they come to the tamest protests loaded for bear (& clearly all souped up on steroids). Increased militarization & aggression by police was evident against the Occupy movement in 2011.

There was a prison revolt in Attica New York in 1971 against brutal, dehumanizing treatment & conditions in the prison. The defiance of the male prisoners was dignified–they wanted justice, not vengeance. Their statement is evocative of Ferguson & a mantra for all the oppressed whose humanity is denied: “We are men! We are not beasts & do not intend to be beaten or driven as such. The entire prison populace has set forth to change forever the ruthless brutalization & disregard for the lives of the prisoners here & throughout the US. What has happened here is but the sound before the fury of those who are oppressed.” (This electrifying defiance was spoken by Elliot L.D. Barkley, a 21-year-old spokesperson for the prisoners who was murdered by the NY state police after the prisoners surrendered. According to witnesses, state troopers searched him out & shot him in the back.)

It’s clear from history that “an injury to one is an injury to all” is an iron law of social transformation. We’re all in this together from Gaza to Ferguson; from civil rights to women’s rights. The Pentagon can arm Israel & the Ferguson cops to the teeth but against the mighty force of international solidarity, tyranny doesn’t stand a chance. We have to win the streets back & regain our right to protest without police violence. The Ferguson Black community has released the first volley of that historic struggle.

It’s a tough world we live in

Children in Islamabad, Pakistan August 14 2014 (M. Muheisen:AP)

It’s a tough world we live in; these are tough times we’re going through. So we need moments to step back & remember why we don’t just throw in the towel or bury ourselves in booze & misanthropy. There’s trauma even in witnessing genocide & seeing thousands cheer it on like entertainment. That creates a real breeding ground for cynicism.

It’s kids who keep us grounded. Not just remembering those who lost their lives so gruesomely in Gaza but children everywhere who deserve a better world & who keep us working for that better world. Misanthropy won’t serve them.

If we continue to believe in humanity & continue to build solidarity with those on the front lines against tyranny, we can forge a world suitable for men & women to live & love in–& our own lives will have been worthwhile.

Al fresco living in Gaza

Gaza; al fresco living August 13 2014

Gaza is forever in our hearts & minds as Palestinians come out from cover, still in shock & mourning, to assess the damage & figure out what to do next. There is trauma; there is resilience & there is the incredible human capacity to make the best of a bad situation.

These two young guys, one with an arm bandaged up to his armpit, are preparing for a stretch of al fresco living—-probably stunned they’re still alive. Israeli apologists for genocide in Gaza try to deflect attention from the number of small children killed by citing death demographics proving young men of this age–the ‘Hamas age’–were the greatest number killed, as if that makes genocide all okay.

We’re glad these young men survived & we don’t give a rat’s ass if they belong to Hamas or any other group. Our fullest solidarity with them. We love that in the midst of rubble, they continue to fly the Palestinian flag, a symbol of their resistance to apartheid & genocide & their commitment to a future Palestine.

Keep rallying to demand “Stop the slaughter in Gaza”, “End the blockade of Gaza” & keep evangelizing for the economic boycott of all Israeli goods (barcode beginning 729).

White supremacist immigration policy

African immigrants at Melilla August 14 2014

There’ve been several photos of undocumented African immigrants to Europe in the past few days because the Spanish coast guard rescued over a thousand traveling on rafts across the Strait of Gibralter between Morocco & Spain. The photos of those rescued are very poignant: some show mothers with infants; others show immigrants who appear shell-shocked from their ordeal. Most are likely malnourished & many are sick. All have been through hell.

Nearly a thousand also tried to scale the triple-layer, 20-foot razor wire fence that separates Morocco from Melilla, a Spanish territory in north Africa, where they can try to gain entry to Europe to find work.

This photo at Melilla is not the poignant genre. This is of from the white supremacist album–& not as metaphor. Forcing malnourished, traumatized people to risk life & injury while watching nonchalantly, arms akimbo, or trying to beat them back with truncheons could not be more malevolent or repugnant–or more indicting of European Union immigration policy which endangers human beings & humiliates them in the bargain.

Does anyone else find this scene reminiscent of the psychos in the hills of Sderot, Israel watching ethnic cleansing in Gaza? Because the impulse behind it is exactly the same.

Immigration is a human right & human beings have the right to do it with dignity. Tear down Fortress Europe & replace the psychos running the place with those who recognize & honor a human being when they see one.

Open the borders! No human being is illegal!

The US war on Black teens

Ferguson, MO August 14 2014 (Scott Olson:Getty Images)

There is nothing new about the murder of unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri last Saturday. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s & Black Power Movement of the 1970s scared the hell out of the rulers of this country. Racism is so fundamental to capitalist rule that it cannot operate without it. Alarmed by the thrust of the Civil Rights struggle, government operatives attempted to discredit the more radical activists & coopt the leadership to the Democratic Party, the graveyard of social movements. Black Power activists were more often subjected to harassment & violence, including the murder of activists like Fred Hampton, murdered in his sleep by Chicago cops & FBI operatives.

Youth are always a problem for the oppressors. They are a rebellious lot who must be broken, demoralized, chastened to accept racism & injustice as their due. We see that played out in Gaza & we see it played out in the streets of the US where the so-called “war on drugs” is nothing but a war on Black youth, a policy to preeempt at all costs the emergence of Black youth as a political force. Nothing terrifies the rulers of this country more than organized Black political power.

Violence against Blacks wasn’t stopped by the Emancipation Proclamation; the history of violence against Blacks in this country is one of the most unspeakable in world history because it is denied & camouflaged behind the lyrics of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. The tack in the war on Black youth since the the 1980s has been massive incarceration of thousands of Black kids for misdemeanor offenses, minor drug charges, & nonsense like lipping off to a cop. Police brutality is a pivotal part of all that & hundreds of unarmed Black teens have been shot down in the streets by police in every major city in this country. And that doesn’t even include harassment like “stop & frisk” laws.

The US government began its massive assaults on civil liberties in the Black community under the guise of the war on drugs. It made chopped liver out of several provisions in the Bill of Rights. White people, including political activists believed all the rubbish about drug gangs, dysfunctional Black families run by matriarchs undoing Black manhood (the Bill Cosby schtick), “Black on Black violence” & a dozen other slanders against Black people. As a result police ran rough-shod over the Bill of Rights. They would shoot an unarmed Black teen & walk away scot-free from prosecution. It’s been open season on Black kids for a long time. And in a case of chickens coming home to roost, the Bill of Rights is now at risk for all of us. That’s where you see the “an injury to one is an injury to all” thing is not just a ceremonial mantra but an iron law of social change.

Ferguson, Missouri is not the first time there have been massive protests against police brutality. The murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012 ignited protests all over this country. So it is no accident that disreputable characters like Al Sharpton (reverend, my ass!), a fool & an operative for the Democratic Party (DP) hot-footed it to Missouri from his bully pupit at CNN. He’s not there to organize massive opposition to racist violence; he’s there to make damn sure it doesn’t go too far but just enough to let off a little steam & then get everybody back voting for the local DP politician in place of taking social action. (It’s an old shell game; once you’ve seen them derail a few social movements you get to know the pattern.) The role of the DP is to control mass opposition to injustice (the role of the Republicans is to control the crazies on the right). What is needed is another civil rights & Black power movement, one that railroads the DP out of the way, as Malcolm X suggested, & will make no compromises that do not serve justice for the Black community & its kids.

“Hands up don’t shoot!” is the mantra of the new movement emerging in Ferguson, Missouri because, have no doubts about it, a new movement for civil rights & Black power is emerging.

May Michael Brown RIP–along with the hundreds of other Black teens shot down on the public streets–while DP politicians including Obama speak of a “post-racial era”. There will be no “post-racial era” until they pull their SWAT teams out of the Black community, until there is full educational, housing, employment, social, political, economic opportunity for every Black boy & girl. And to accomplish that, quite frankly, will take a revolution.

Homeless in Gaza

Homeless in Gaza August 13 2014

Israel & the US have a public relations catastrophe on their hands after tweets went round the world exposing ethnic cleansing in Gaza. It was certain their think tanks would work overtime to counter the images of Palestinian children. Anyone who’s ever tangled with a Zionist knows they’re a broken record of whining that anti-Zionism is anti-Jewish. Guilt-baiting is their stock-in-trade & often quite effective even though they wear it to death.

The Palestinian solidarity movement has made itself entirely clear: there is no room in this movement for anti-Semitism or racism of any kind. The political group who don’t seem to get that are libertarians. There are fifty different varieties of libertarians but the ones we’re speaking of are those who think David Duke, the white supremacist, anti-Semite, & former grand poobah of the KKK, has a place in our movement. Or the ones who get into the conspiracy of illuminati, Free Masons, & Rothschild bankers & think David Ickey-poo sincerely supports Palestinians.

We want to build an international movement where men & women of every hue are comfortable. Does anyone seriously think civil rights activists would be comfortable speaking on the same platform as David Duke who considers them inferior beings? You can say “enough with the harping on this question” but looking at media coverage of the Palestinian solidarity movement shows you cannot harp on this enough.

According to a 2005 report by the US State Department, anti-Semitic incidents have increased significantly since 2000, including harassment & intimidation; vandalism (graffiti, fire bombings of Jewish schools, desecration of synagogues & cemeteries); physical assaults. They noted the increase particularly in France, Germany, the UK, Belgium, & The Netherlands & they blamed it on far-right groups as well as “disadvantaged & disaffected Muslim youth”. It isn’t the most reliable report in the world because it confounds Palestinian solidarity with anti-Semitism but an increase of such incidents are a matter of grave concern. They did not report a rise of anti-Semitic incidents in the US.

One wonders if they did a comparative analysis of the rampant Islamophobia, persecution of Roma, & victimization of immigrants that prevail as state policy in some of those same countries–in particular France, Greece, & The Netherlands. Is the increase in anti-Semitism part of the general trend of political polarization & the rise of extreme right-wing goon squads or is it sui generis for some unexplained reason?

What’s emerging now among politicians & media are alarmist reports about the rise of anti-Semitism which they blatantly & shamefully link to Palestinian solidarity. The UN’s Ban Ki-moon, who couldn’t bring himself to condemn Israeli ethnic cleansing, issued one of the first volleys in this insidious campaign deploring anti-Semitic attacks in Europe since the genocide in Gaza began. Several media sources followed suit, denouncing anti-Semitism among Palestinian supporters, which they claim is evident & rampant on social media.

French politicians who are forcibly deporting Roma & attempting to ban Palestinian solidarity protests are up in arms about vandalizing & looting of Jewish businesses, burning of cars in Jewish neighborhoods, & clashes between Palestinian supporters & Jewish residents. They claim Palestinian supporters entered Jewish neighborhoods on more than one occasion chanting “Gas the Jews” & “Kill the Jews”.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who has distinguished himself for xenophobia & forcible deportation of Roma says he was “profoundly shocked & revolted” by an incident in Paris which he claims turned violent when Palestinian supporters trapped Jews in a synagogue. One of those trapped later told Israeli TV that “the streets outside were “like an intifada”.”

Newsweek magazine, which has a history of inflammatory journalism, had an article titled ” “Exodus: Why Europe’s Jews Are Fleeing Once Again” about anti-Semitism in Europe & they described that incident at the Paris synagogue. The article began: “The mob howled for vengeance, the missiles raining down on the synagogue walls as the worshippers huddled inside.”–& went downhill from there. Even the French minister didn’t accuse Palestinian supporters of attacking the synagogue with missiles.

Newsweek drew on the most questionable sources for information about rising anti-Semitism: the Zionist Anti-Defamation League; Natan Sharansky, a Russian Zionist who administers settlers for Israel; & another schnook named Ben Cohen who says: “Saying that Jews are the only nation who don’t have the right to self-determination, smearing Israel as a modern incarnation of Nazi Germany or apartheid South Africa, asserting that the ‘Israel Lobby’ manipulates American foreign policy from the shadows is unmistakably anti-Semitism.” Who’s smearing who here!?

If these anti-Semitic incidents are real, that’s alarming; if Palestinian supporters are involved, that’s worse than reprehensible. But frankly, that’s highly doubtful & every attempt to smear Palestinian solidarity with this crap is slander intended to discredit justice. If there were “Palestinian supporters” harassing synagogues, let two words suffice: agents provocateurs.

It’s very likely there’s an increase of anti-Semitism in Europe as part of the political polarization in response to neoliberal austerity programs & the rise of neo-Nazi groups like Golden Dawn in Greece. We only wish such alarmism & concern included Roma & immigrants in France & elsewhere, & Palestinians under siege in Gaza.

This man in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza sleeps al fresco outside his apartment which was bombed during a 72-hour ceasefire which Israel violated (Aug 11). Twitter this, Israel!

Respond to the slanders against Palestinians & the solidarity movement with larger rallies & evangelize for the economic boycott of all Israeli products (barcode beginning 729).

The barbarity of European Union immigration policy

African immigrants at Melilla August 13 2014

Undocumented immigration from the four corners of this planet is one of the greatest crises of this generation exposing the wretched underbelly of neoliberal capitalism, the barbaric phase of capitalism. Who can count that high, but there are an estimated 200 million immigrants traveling enormous distances & treacherous routes to find rest & work in the plundering countries.

On the southern US border with Mexico, there is a massive influx of unaccompanied children from Central America, estimated at nearly 60,000 children just in the past ten months. The phenomenon of unaccompanied immigrant children exists on every single of the well-traveled routes: from Zimbabwe, children cross a crocodile-infested river into South Africa; from Afghanistan, they travel in engine compartments of cars to sneak past immigration controls; young people from all over Africa attempt to scale barb wire fences, beaten by Moroccan cops on one side & Spanish cops on the other, to enter the north African enclave of Melilla where they can try to claim refuge in European territory. Israel appears to be the only country African immigrants are trying to escape from because the racist violence is so severe. Some of the immigrants are from places like South Sudan & Congo where Israel has massive investments for plunder.

There’s more rubbish written about these immigrants than a sane mind can grasp. There’s that Indian parable about the blind man trying to determine what an elephant looks like by feeling different parts of the elephant’s body. Most anti-immigration polemicists apparently never make it past the elephant’s ass. US politicians claim the children are associated with drugs & prostitution; some say they’re fleeing from gang violence in their own countries; some claim they’re part of organized crime cartels (when in fact most are too young for US government employment); & there are always the schnooks who claim they’re coming here for welfare benefits like food stamps even though largesse is not a quality of social services in the US. If you’re lucky, you get fifty cents a day for food stamps.

The conduct & policies of European Union border patrols in the Mediterranean region are as criminal as it gets, making the sea a graveyard for thousands of immigrants, with politicians incapable of the higher human emotions trying to cover their crimes with ceremonial crocodile tears. Officials from the Obama regime put on a sad face talking about the humanitarian crisis here & then propose legislation to fast-track deport the kids in violation of every standard of child welfare & sanctuary.

It’s quite observable that children are the primary victims of neoliberal plunder & military policy. Just as the children of Gaza are exposing Israel, the children of Central America & Africa are exposing the plundering countries. Child welfare recognizes no boundaries; human solidarity doesn’t either.

These young men are trying to cross into Spanish territory in north Africa at Melilla where there is a refugee center. We wish them solidarity & Godspeed on their journey.

Open the damn borders! No human being is illegal!
