The president of Hindu Mahasabha, a Hindutva political party in India, says consuming cow urine & applying cow manure to the body of someone ill with corona virus, along with chanting a special mantra, will kill the virus & ‘end its effects on the world’. Cow urine is extensively used in Ayurvedic medicine, at least as extensively as horse urine is used in western menopause & hormone medicine (which is also given to cancer patients). Without an examination of the scientific literature, it should not be subject to ridicule, although certainly to skepticism & scientific scrutiny. There doesn’t appear to be any research on the efficacy of cow urine therapy but there has been on the adverse estrogenic effects of horse urine which include heart disease, blood clots, strokes, & cancer.
Cow dung is another thing entirely. It is mostly used as fertilizer or garden compost & can be easily bought on the internet. Dung can harbor e. coli, mad cow disease, & several other deadly bacteria & viruses. Many of the same diseases are common not just in cows but in sheep, goats, pigs, dogs, & cats. It’s not certain how much of the dung sold has been tested for these diseases.
India has a rich Ayurvedic medical tradition which influenced the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Despite the prejudices mocking them, they are scientific modalities, not folk medicine (although they evolved from folk medicine), quackery, or New Age spiritualism. China has a medical system including both TCM & western medicine. The Hindutva swami who suggests drinking pee & smearing cow dung as a cure for the corona virus is not a medical practitioner. He’s just a rightwing guy talking through his ass.
