Bangladesh’s refugee commissioner claims 6,000 to 7,000 Rohingya refugees have “expressed their willingness to be relocated to Bhashan Char”, an uninhabitable island in the middle of nowhere. Since Bangladesh has already built barrack housing there for 150,000, it’s likely that a considerable amount of arm-twisting, threats, & coercion have led to these ‘expressions of willingness’. It’s not a solution for Rohingya refugees; it’s a dumping ground which will lead to more suffering than what they already endure in Bangladesh camps without refugee rights to education or employment. There is no economy on Bhashan Char, no livestock, no arable land, & it is waterlogged most of the time due to monsoons. The UN is helping administer this forced relocation for the Bangladeshi government rather than call it out as a slower form of genocide.
